About me

I am a freelance artist endlessly inspired by nature, in particular life found in the sea and in fresh water. I have a long standing love of drawing and painting flowers and plants and a fascination with fine detail. The vast majority of my work is from life, drawn first into sketchbooks and progressing to watercolour paintings.

As a child I was always making things, but a new Art teacher when I was 16 revealed my ability to draw. I won First Prize for a Still Life painting entered in the 1971 National Eisteddfod of Wales competition, followed in 1972 by a Foundation Course at Swansea College of Art. I then pursued part of a degree course in Graphic Design at Maidstone College of Art.

My Art School experience was mixed as I was discouraged from drawing from life as pointless when you could take a photo instead. I have persisted with my belief that drawing underpins, informs and challenges the artist. Please visit the Galleries to see examples of my work and My Studio for information on how I work.

I am also employed part time as the Resident Artist at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, Devon. I take school groups from age 5 to art school students around the aquarium, developing their sketchbook, drawing and observational skills. I also take on bespoke art projects for schools and organise the annual Big Draw event in the autumn half term. For more information on my work at the aquarium go to www.justaddh2o.tv and look in the Staffroom and Workshops sections.
